:: About Us ::
Who is the Motocross Safety Council?
The MSC is a volunteer organization made up of concerned riders, parents,
track workers, owners and promoters that is committed to promoting safety
in the sport of motocross. It was founded by Lee Miller, Ricky Allen and
Tom Brinkman--three of the five members of the Board of Directors. Bill
Matthews and Larry Smith (one of Alabama's most respected track-side
paramedics) hold the remaining Board of Director positions.
How did it get started?
Like many in our sport, MSC Board Members were stunned by the devastating
series of motocross injuries and deaths in 2005, 2006, and 2007. The dangers
and consequences of the risks motocrossers take were tragically illustrated when
then 18-year old Chase Borders, son of former Loretta Lynn National Champion
Johnny Borders was paralyzed from the neck down after crashing the day after
graduating high school on May 27th, 2006. This and other similarly heart breaking
injuries were the driving force behind the creation of the Motocross Safety Council.
Where is it going?
Our hope is to improve safety awareness first in Alabama and the Southeast, then
throughout the entire motocross community. Many in the sport choose to ignore or
play down the risks--the "get another sport" crowd. Others prefer not to think or talk
about the risks. "If I don't acknowledge it, the risk isn't real or it just won't happen to
me or my child"--the "head in the sand" crowd. Finally there are those that
acknowledge motocross is dangerous, knowingly accept the risks, and want to do
what ever is possible to reduce the frequency and severity of motocross-related
injuries. The volunteer members and supporters of the Motocross Safety Council are
among those that acknowledge the risks but are working to reduce them.
Every other form of motor sport has a major, well-established safety program. With
your help, we can make safety awareness and involvement an accepted norm in
motocross.
We invite your comments and your assistance in making our dream a reality--a
motocross world where everyone goes home in the vehicle they came in.
